That would work too. If you have the money, you could always get a few of those paving or walkway stones that people use for paths to gardens and such. They won't absorb the heat, will protect the wooden deck and are kind of decorative. 4 1'x1' would work if you smooshed them together to function as a kind of base.

Thanks a lot. My husband has suggested a metal plate to put underneath it for the reason of, well, burning down the deck. So we'll go from there.

Yes I do own a firebowl. We usually just burn wood, but my looney husband has been known to set fire to pumpkins. We do buy wood because the free stuff is just too smokey (usually wet), and I like a nice hot fire. We use it on a concrete slab in our back yard. I am sure it would work fine on a wooden patio, because ours has an ash-catcher at the bottom. We also don't let it burn unattended.

Ours isn't terribly deep, so when the wind catches it just so, you get a pillar of flying embers. So, I personally wouldn't burn it too close to a wooden house.

If you are worried about the wooden patio, hose it down about an hour before you light it, just in the area nearest to the bowl itself. That should keep things pretty safe.

Hi, this is David July's friend, Claire, with a random question for you: you own a firepit/bowl right? What sorts of things do you burn in it (do you buy wood?) and do you use it on a wooden patio? Thanks!

River has a pair of bright orange and white running shoes too. They are New Balance and his feet glow when he wears them. He is in a track competition this Saturday, so hopefully the bright orange will blind the other kids and he will win. muhahahahaha!
