Bird in a basket

Posted on | May 27, 2006 | 2 Comments

This little guy was a part of our trip to the Bird of Prey center in Maitland. I got some decent pictures, but the permanent residents had wire cages which were nearly impossible to shoot through with the brutal noon-time light. My camera also ran out of juice for the really good shots of the baby owls and the bald eage. There are a few more shots I am going to add to this set…but isn’t this guy just adorable?

So, as a warning, these are not artistic because I was too excited to get the artistic shots. I just wanted everyone to see the coolness I got to see. I love birds!

He IS adorable! I’m glad you guys got to go…now at least I can experience it via pictures. How many birds in all would you say they housed? Are all of the birds just passing through or do some of them call it home there?

They have about 40 permanent residents. Some were wounded but many were imprinted, which leaves them unable to go into the wild. Many of the babies are just passing through as the drought and development seem to be devasating the populations of the lesser known birds, like the burrowing owls and the caracaras. They do amazing work there… I just wish there was more that I could do. Sometimes it just breaks my heart.

The owls were my favorite I think. Their was this one little guy, I forgot what he was, that just sat on his little stick and clicked at us. He was so small and so damn cute. Birds are amazing creatures.
