Tour de France winner tests positive for drugs

I listened to NPR, watched the news and rooted for him the whole way. Riding through agonizing pain, he felt like the underdog to me, and I love underdogs. He sprung back from an 8 minute deficit. I don’t know what this discovery means… but it’s not good. Was my faith misplaced? Cheaters often win, but if he doped then I hope that he’s nailed for it. Mental strength in races like those are more important than physical ones. It’s hard to really pass judgement because I’ve never ridden like that, with that kind of pain. But I think he would have been a winner for finishing the race, even without the yellow jersey. I admired his strength…now I just hope there was some mistake.

These guys really lose sight of why they started cycling in the first place. Its not about the finish, its about the journey. Of course, I’ve never ridden in anything like that, so I am somewhat unqualified to comment.

But you are qualified. You love the sport. It’s when it gets clouded with the obscene need to win that the journey is tainted. I am an idealist, but I always thought the love for riding should be the first reason to compete, not to win.

shouldnt it be that way with ALL sports? Look at how the need to win, be the best and overachieve, has completely changed the faces of basketball, football and baseball… I am not an athlete in an sense, but it should be for the love of the game/sport.
