My Protest….

Dear Appeals Committee:

I have encountered serious ongoing academic issues with Professor Patricia Simmons and her method of instruction for the Humanities: The Modern Period (Hum 306) in the Spring term and I would like to contest my final grade. Due to miscommunication and unprofessional practices, I was required to accept an Incomplete until last week. On Monday I learned that I was awarded a C-.

Throughout my academic career I have worked hard for grades that never fell below a B. This C- is an insult to my hard work. Prof. Simmon’s teaching methods fell far below the standard set by the Humanities department. I am used to professors with specific insight and instructional knowledge. I am not accustomed to someone who teaches directly out of the book and assigns at least half a class, all semester, to student presentations. In effect, the students taught half of the class from random subjects mentioned in the Humanities textbook.

I attempted to construct a successful senior thesis without any guidance from Prof. Simmons. Although I appreciated being awarded extra time to wrap up my Senior project, I felt hamstrung by her lack of support. I finished my thesis feeling cheated and unsure.

In addition, both the midterm and final exams tested on obtuse, and often, unfamiliar information. I remain ignorant as to the grade on my final exam.  Technically I failed the midterm, but due to the overwhelmingly poor scores in the class, Prof. Simmons instituted an 18 point curve. That brought my grade up to a C-. I thought that I could pull the grade up with my final exam and paper. That was a false hope.

I would like to opportunity to have my grade re-evaluated. I do not believe that I was given a chance to succeed in Prof. Simmon’s class.

If you require any additional assistance in this matter, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your time.

Very well-written. I have written a few appeals lately (in regards to a language credit - which I, as an English masters student, should not need) and I think this is great. I wish you luck in this endeavor.
