We have a shelter very close to campus and that’s why they come over here, hassling the kids. On more than one occassion they have stopped me at the parking meter, in the student union, and at fast food drive thrus, which is the worst because they see you have some money AND food.

Really?!? I didn’t know there were a lot up there. I’ve seen them in Miami (all over) and in San Francisco (all over) and in our downtown, but this was the first time they roamed into our neighborhood. I shouldn’t be surprised, though. They passed an ordinance that bans Food Not Bombs (and any other group) from feeding the homeless @ Lake Eola. And I think they are moving the shelter further away so that they can gentrify the Parramore area. They need somewhere to go, I guess. Again, I’m an idealist, because I think there should be programs (mental and addiction) to help them in a long term sense..and perhaps the problem wouldn’t be so bad… but I live in a happy world with fluffy trees…

I would have run far far away. I don’t handle strangers/bums well. And you think I would since there are a good deal of transients in Tallahassee. It’s one of the first things freshmen learn about when they come to college.

I try to be kind, or at least receptive to everyone. But there were too drunk to notice. I am careful, but will be more so on my afternoon walks. And my puppies will KILL if someone tries to hurt me!!…the demon beagles of doom!

I give you tons of credit for even trying to speak to them. Having gotten hit up for money, smokes and then having said people scream at me for not having anything on me (since I do not carry cash or smokes) I have become very bitter. Plus, living in the land of ass hat drunk people, I do not have patience with them especially when I am sober. Please be careful and bless you for your attempts at kindness.
