Purple Sky

Did I forget to mention? September 4th, 2004

I never thought I would ever see lavender clouds, but they float above my house, promising menace.

We have tried to kill time with movies, playing with the dogs, cleaning the house and talking on the phone. But, still, we wait. I am not eager for winds to howl and branches to fall but this long delay in any kind of action wears on me. Not to mention the boredom. I am about to start playing video games and drinking some wine since there doesn’t seem to anything else to do.

People have called, mostly those out of the path of Frances, the slow bitchmonster sitting just off the coast, and they wonder how I am faring. Well, right now I am fine. But I am tired of the waiting. The best thing would be for this thing to veer back into the Atlantic and to piss off somewhere north. But I have a feeling that she’s going to linger, like a former lover, just at the edge of our conciousness.

Being stuck indoors makes me feel alone. I realize I am lucky. I have David and the beagle boys. Valentine has slept the whole day, so he isn’t much company, but there is movement about my house. I just wish this cessation of life outside would go away. I heard a bird, defiant and brave, singing on the power line outside my house. I it dawned on me how strange that song seemed. There is no noise outside, save the rustling of the trees and the tip tap of rain. But a bird, a solitary bird, brought the silence home to me. I miss the sounds of crickets and frogs right now. I miss them alot.

For now, though, I watch Pip playing in my blankets and Puck snoozing on the couch. David is surfing on his computer and we all wait.

But the sky was lavender this evening, so something must be going right somewhere.

We woke up to the wind ripping shingles off our roof this morning. I can’t tell how much the boards are helping, but I’d imagine we’re better off with them here than not.

So now the conern is the exposed roof leaking.

If you guys need repairs or help preparing for the next hurricanes, let us know. I’ve got some tools and now some knowledge for boarding up, etc.

Thanks for the help, love. We are pretty good at the moment. Just a few shingles missing!

And there is not going to be a next one. I have decided to take Hurricanes off the forecast for Florida for the next year!

We lost so many shingles that we have to report our roof to the insurance. This whole disaster thing sucks.
