Bullies
Did I forget to mention? November 9th, 2004
Why is aggravating me such fun?
I thought he was nice in the beginning, when my eyes remained clouded by gratitude for the new job, the money and the opportunity to show my stuff. But the honeymoon is over, time enough passed to show me the reality of things.
My bossy is a know-it-all bully. Severly (to the point of agony)Christian, he espouses the great passages of the bible while dumping candy wrappers in my recycle bin. Does this image seem strange to you ? It should. He likes to aggravate but wears the cloak of Christian righteousness proudly. Meanwhile, his daily entertainment comes from the humiliation of all those around them. Painful “jokes” shoot from his mouth, pricking the victim most cruelly. But understand, for all his lack of education, he knows how to play the game. The line, toed time and again, shall never be crossed. Clearly marked boundaries allow him the freedom to joke and torment to his heart’s delight, and it disgusts me.
I understand that I am working in a man’s world, this world of utilities. However, this old boy’s network bullshit game of feigning punches till the other person flinches is really nothing more than socially accepted bullying.
I get picked on, judged, and endlessly razzed. But while I completly understand what he’s about, he has no idea what I am doing here.
I’m taking brutal advantage of your innocense and loyalty to this company. I am going to take everything I can in money and experience and in time I will leave. And you will still be a bully.
About

Whether you stay in Florida or move elsewhere, you have got to consider working in the non-profit social services sector. Yes, the pay scale is generally lower than would be for a similar position with a for-profit company. But it’s often more palatable when you’re doing work based on a mission other making more dollars.

It’s kind of a Monster.com for nonprofits. I’ve met the executive director, Ami Dar, and heard him speak a couple times. Great guy and a cool organization. And there are international listings, in case you two really want to fly the coop.
Okay, this is off-topic from your post, but after I sent my last comment, I wandered over to Idealist.org myself. Smack dab in the middle of their home page is a headline quite relevant to what I do.

I don’t expect you to publish this comment. I just thought the timing was kind of funny and had to share it with someone.

That’s just unacceptable, but it’s good to hear that you’re sticking to your guns and aiming for your objective(s).
In 10 years you’ll be off somewhere else, living your life and growing. He’ll still be there.
People pass judgments when they don’t understand one another. Unfortunately your co-workers fall into the category of the ignorant; rather than accepting everyone they are afraid. Fear breeds ignorance and to the ignorant change is the most feared aspect of life. I don’t know if this makes any sense but it is late and I am tired. Just remember that you are beautiful because you are open to everything, and they are the ones who will never experience the true joys of friendship, love and life.
The only satisfaction I derive from the situation is that he will remain a company man here while someday I will work independant of the contstraints of companies. The sad thing is that he doesn’t see the restrictions and binding chains that keep him lingering here. Sucker.
J - nonprofits sound like the only redeemable kind of people to work for…and its a damn fine idea.
Jooolie - you are right. And thanks for the phonecall love. It meant a lot. Sorry I was in such a shitty ass mood.
N - I have to stick to my guns. It pisses them off more =)
I saw him afraid today. I almost smiled.
