Off 60th to the Left

When looking at prospective houses, eating a restaurants, watching movies, I can’t make a clear judgment. In being so damn enthusiastic about everything on the first blush, there are often issues that I will pick apart later with a bitter eye, disappointed in myself that I didn’t see it the first time. In talking a lot about this lately (I was slightly mocked by my family for taking it personally when they did not enjoy something as much as I do) I understand that I’m prone to disappointment in the end. But I still hope for the best in everything. It’s one of my more charming if naive qualities.

I went to see a house yesterday afternoon. It’s still in my neighborhood, although about 20 blocks east, beyond the line of cutesy bungalows and elegant Victorians. The house is only 60 some odd years old. It’s a youngin’ in terms of the houses I like, but it’s fucking massive. It really could be too much house for us, but I do have an addiction to books that needs space, so never mind. Shall I describe it to you? Of course I shall!

Driving up, the houses next to it are immaculate 2 story classic homes. Both are well maintained, with lovely paint jobs. Ours is hidden by a hedge, bisected by a wrought iron gate and a sad frame for the gate. Honestly, the place needs a paint job. But two large naked shade trees grew just in front of one of the rooms. You open the red door and the living room welcomes you to the right. The far corner has large windows, that form the corner of the room itself. A funky, round fireplace (when we get the house, pictures will be forthcoming), painted white, fills the middle wall. When you look to the left, the dining room opens up from the living room and into the kitchen. It’s kind of like my house now, except the kitchen is actually a room, with walls and a little space for a table instead of the wasted expanse we live in now. So it flows well. Before you get to the kitchen a little carpeted hall opens up. It’s got a funky built-in in the corner, and on the left is David’s future office – hardwood floors, big windows, tons of room, with two closets. The bathroom is in the middle. You can actually sit down on the toilet the way the toilet makers intended. There’s also a little vanity in the bathroom. My soon-to-be office space has built in bookshelves, a big window, and hardwood floors. The upstairs is carpeted, with storage on the stairs in shelves, a linen closet up there and two good sized bedrooms. And outside, beyond the 1 car detached garage is a basketball court. I know, I don’t need a basketball court, but it’s there for Puck to lay on when its sunny. The back yard is massive, like our yard on Nebraska Street.

But we haven’t been approved yet.

We were approved for the house we saw on Sunday.

Shit.

This sounds really freaking cool. I can’t wait to see pictures. Do you garden? It sounds like the front has potential for clean up and trimming. good luck ;)

I try to garden. I’m hoping to have better success at this house. There is plenty of space, so I have no excuse. But I have to figure out how to kill all those blackberry bushes. They are swallowing the back of the yard.
