I got a pen

I don’t like to write about my day job here. It wouldn’t do expose my frustrations (we all have them, be honest) with the office or policies. This is not my dream job (J.K. Rowling is currently filling my position, but she’s willing to abdicate the role once I’ve actually finished writing a second book), but I really like what I do and the people are amazing. My darling friend hired me a year ago (she became a darling friend after she hired me), and I received my “Thanks for being here a year” present from the company. It’s a pen, a very spiffy, groovy pen. Another friend who was hired around the same time as I was commented,
“I would rather have gotten the $30 they spent on the pen.”
I shook my head, “I like the pen.”
She smiled, “You would.”
And I do. I like the pen. It feels heavy in my grasp, substantial. The top is magnetic, so it makes a satisfying little click when I put it back on, and the aluminum body stays cool in my hand. It’s not an afterthought, and that is one of the reasons I love working here.
I like the ethics of my company. I like that they are looking at green initiatives, that they are willing to lease a car for those of us at the other office so we can commute together, that I have health insurance that is affordable, that they care. I like that the office is mostly paperless, that we have happy hours and that people actually attend. I love that I’ve made good friends.
So, with my pen, I’m going to make this amazing week. Saturday is my birthday, and David and I are going to do three things this weekend that we’ve never done before. He got free tickets to the Chinese Garden (his office is moving close to them), so that’s one… let’s see what the rest of the week brings, shall we?

I’m a pen-o-holic. I love pens. I love writing with them. I love writing on good paper with them. I love writing.
But I love paper-free more.
Anyhow…
I have a Rotring 600 Aluminum, a Rotring 600 matte black, and a green Lamy fountain pen.
I get my pens at Daly’s Pen Shop.
I don’t treat them kindly – I use all of them. But all of them, especially the Rotrings, have a great heft in my hand and are perfectly balanced instruments of which dreams are made.

I have drawers full of pens. And my taste in them changes depending on my mood. I will tell you, I never use black pens. Black ink is for print, not for writing. I prefer purple (shocking, I know) but I also like nice blue ink. I steal the hubbie’s art pens sometimes, because they are like writing with an alien – strangely structured and their weight is unusual and unbalanced (at least for writing).
I may have to visit your pens one of these days… (insert winning lotto ticket here)
