Ikea….joy joy

Posted on | January 24, 2005 | 14 Comments

This was in the Sentinel this morning.

IKEA buys pricey site near Millenia

Word on the street is that IKEA International A/S, the giant Swedish furniture retailer, has bought 30 acres near the Mall at Millenia in southwest Orlando for the region’s first store. IKEA stores are big — this one is supposed to be 265,000 square feet. The price paid for the land was said to be big, too: $20 million. Reports are that IKEA beat out Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to get the land.

I should be excited, really I should. But they are notoriously slow to build and stock stores. I think the Atlanta store has been in the works for 3 years or something. Still, I love their furniture and look forward to living near a store someday. I just think this store will be opening long after we move.

I like their stuff because everything doesn’t look like a replica of 19th century furniture. When oh when will people in this country let go of that look!?

Vanya does. She has bookshelves from them and they look fantabulous, and don’t buckle or bow from the weight. She also has their entertainment center. It’s quite attractive.

I love Ikea because they make their furniture and accessories from renewable resources. That, in my book, is one of the most important things a company can do. And their furniture always looks cool!

Does anyone have Ikea furniture? Is it even any good?

You may be in a retirement home before the store opens….

At least they are expanding. And Vanya, when I heard the news I immediatly thought of you…and I knew you would be tortured…

The building of high end malls and housing next to low end communities is really common. Everywhere. I think they are called tranistional communites.

Your are a cruel mistress. Why o’ why would you get my hopes up? The store will not be built for years. I could be elderly by the grand opening. I am so happy, and yet so sad.

That’s just how development works. In DC you have $500,000 townhouses next to crackhouses.

The wealth will stay with the wealthy as long as we continue to roll over and take it in the ass (pardon the expression).

I highly recommend the latest ISR (Internation Socialist Review). Some great points in there. People can squawk and bitch and complain all day, but nothing will change. Wake up your neighbor, wake up your coworkers until the chain reaction shakes the establishment to it’s foundation.

A – I thought that would make you smile.

N – that is so typically Florida, or maybe that’s just how developement works. It makes sense that they would go into an impoverished area because the land is cheap…. I just wish some of the wealth was allowed to bleed over to the people that need it the most.

Down the road is also the Humane Society! That was where we adopted Val…

Nice! I like their stuff but hate mailorder furniture.

Side note. It’s it crazy weird how the Mall at Millenia is so nice and posh (I hate nice and posh but love that mall. Dunno why) and just down the road it’s basically a ghetto.
