Mt. St. Helen’s – there are some spectacular pictures in the slideshow!
Digital projection – the wave of the future – I think there’s something to watching a digital film. I’ve heard that you sacrifice sharpness for the organic feel of classic film. Unless specifically set up for an old feel, I want my picture clear and crips. Give me DP screens all day!
Beer- it’s a great bumper seat!

I agree, I’m just not all that nostalgic about those black spots that show up in film movies. The whole I miss the look just seems silly, it’s like people saying that they don’t like photography because they miss the organic feel of oil painting.

As a side note, I think when things go digitial it will be easier for independant filmmakers to get their films out there. Film is expensive, and digital is for all intents and purposes cheap in comparison.

I tend to agree with you. Save the grainy/old/spotty effects of film for the intro or something….as in the movie seven. although that movie did have a grainy feel to it, which set the mood, but most films today, with their grande battle scenes and luscious landscapes, deserve the crystal clear presentation of digital.

as my side note….i personally refuse to go all digital as a pahtographer….just my own personal preference, but movie film is a different story.

Of course there will always be those who choose to go analog, which is cool. The problem is that for filmmakers it isn’t really a choice, unlike the other mediums.

Cat I think both formats are valid with photography. There is something very natural about the process of taking pictures and developing them. I like digital for the immediacy, but I almost love the surprise of the shots taken with a traditional camera more. I don’t ever really know how cool or how bad those images will come out until the film has been processed. It’s like getting a present!
But for movie films…..digital is better I. It also keeps better in the long run. The degradation of the film itself is tragic, and can be alleviated by using the digital format (and I hear they are trying to digitize a lot of the older films because they are disintigrating)
Plus…I really like sound. The sound is better on the DLP screens….but that’s just me

Well, they went to digital sound without much arguement. I guess nobody felt nostalgic about the ‘pop’ and ‘hiss’ of analog sound.
